Pipework Stress Analysis

Designing a piping system is more than just routeing a pipe from one point to another.  A good understanding of the thermal expansion, pressure and external loads to be experienced by the system is necessary in order to prevent a loss of containment with potential disastrous consequences.

  • Our expertise includes evaluating stresses of piping systems, either using manual methods or licensed CAESAR II software, to provide calculations to IGE/TD/12, PD 8010, ASME B31.8, ASME B31.3 and ASME B31.1 Codes.
  • Compute pipework loads on equipment and verification against manufacturer’s allowable limits.
  • Undertake flange leakage assessment

We have developed an effective change management process to assist our clients in capturing, analysing, impact assessing, documenting and managing changes to their assets, with the option of embedding our professionals into existing project teams.

We evaluate every aspect of the asset modification (including temporary, operational and procedural changes) and apply rigorous step-wise techniques in identifying the risks, quantifying the consequences and utilising a tracker to ensure that all pre and post implementation actions are satisfactorily complete at the right stage.

One of the hard lessons our industry has learned is that change can have unintended consequences that could be catastrophic in some cases, for example the Flixborough Chemical Plant Explosion of 1974, if not properly documented and managed.

As a firm, the Flixborough Chemical Plant explosion teaches us the following:

  • How the integrity of a well designed and constructed plant was compromised by a pipework modification with no proper design consideration or safety testing.  
  • That establishing the right level of competence for every role is important in a change process, including the approving authorities.

As a result, our change management procedure has been designed to incorporate the lessons learned from the Flixborough plant explosion, to produce outcomes that define the level of assurance and review that is proportional to the scale and complexity of the evaluated risk associated with the asset modification.
